Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community
7.1 Meet professional ethics and responsibilities
7.1 Comply with legislative, administrative and organisational requirements
7.3 Engage with the parents/carers
7.4 Engage with professional teaching networks and broader communities
Engaging with all aspects of the community we teach within is something every teacher should do. We need to navigate a range of networks within a school and form relationships with all stakeholders other than of course our students, including colleagues and the parents/caregivers of students we teach.
I recognise the importance of engaging and involving parents and carers in student’s education. In my future classrooms I plan to form open and respecting relationships and forms of communications. As a pre-service teacher on placement I have always put myself out there and made myself known to parents. From day one I display a poster about myself on the door and my role in their children’s classroom. I seek to involve them wherever possible. In reading rotations and maths activities I have utilised parent help and participation in activities. It gives the students ease having parent help and takes away any pressures, it also allows parents insight into the happenings of the classroom. Previously I have along with my mentors help sent letters home to parents seeking help in cooking activities and excursions outside the classroom. I make effort to communicate with parents through student’s home readers and homework.
I remain professional and respectable at all times and recognise it is my duty to adhere to professional ethics and responsibilities. Key principles and values including integrity, dignity, responsibility, respect, justice and care are things I hold close and make sure I uphold and include in my professional persona.
Within the community of the area I am teaching within I plan to make contact and involve as it as much as I can within the classroom. It want to bring life experiences, professional people of the community and a range of resources into the classroom to enrich learning. I want to partake in community events and projects and encourage my students to.
More specifically looking at the teaching network within the school I strive to form positive and nurturing relationships. I think it is of most importance to network with other teachers. Whilst on placements I have always communicated with teachers all over the school and taken the time to observe specialists teachers. I have been whelmed by the benefits of creating partnerships with other teachers for guidance and advice, sharing of resources and materials and reflecting on practice. It has helped me broaden my knowledge and practice in the past and will continue to in the future.
