Teaching students the content of the curriculum is the main objective of our jobs as teachers, it is the reason students come to school every day – to learn. Therefore it is important to effectively teach and deliver the content of the curriculum. As teachers we are mandated to teach the Australian National Curriculum in schools. The curriculum sets standards for what all students should learn as they progress through school. It aims to set the building blocks and foundations for their future lives. I have learnt that there are a number of factors we need to consider for the outcomes of the curriculum to be most successful for students.
We need to make the curriculum engaging! This is something I endeavour to do in all my lessons. As a creative person I like to make learning fun, engaging, interesting and attempt to capture student’s innate curiosity. I like to think of different ways to implement learning to meet all styles of learning, and allow all students to access the content in a way that resonates with them. It is important to make learning meaningful by making authentic connections and links to their own personal lives and experiences. Which is why it’s important to know our students. By applying learning to real life experiences it allows students to see the value of the task at hand.
I am very familiar with the curriculum, however I know I am not likely, nor expected to confidently know every part of the curriculum across all learning areas and ages. I accept it as my responsibility to take it upon myself to seek more information and learn areas I may lack knowledge in. I am lifelong learner and will continue to willingly take the time and effort educate myself to best teach my students on a daily basis.
Although the act of teaching content in classrooms has only been a small portion of my degree, I have still had the opportunity to work with and manipulate the curriculum to design unit and lesson plans for different scenarios and tasks. These have enabled me to design, structure and sequence lessons to meet the outcomes of the intended content.
