Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments
4.1 Support student participation
4.2 Manage classroom activities
4.3 Manage challenging behaviours
4.4 Maintain student safety
Creating a safe and supportive learning environment is absolutely essential for optimal learning. Every student within the class should feel respected and have a sense of belonging when they come to school every day. I feel it is my responsibility to create and maintain such an environment where each and every student is welcomed and embraced by others. I strongly believe that before productive learning can take place students basic needs should be met, just as we ourselves would need. It is important to create an atmosphere that cultivates respect and appreciates differences in each other including diverse cultures, beliefs systems and backgrounds. We should feel privileged to have diverse, global citizens within our classrooms that bring unique backgrounds and experiences to us all. We need to teach students these accepting attitudes and model this in ourselves.
Every child deserves the opportunity to be involved and participate in all classroom activities. It is through creating a positive classroom environment, delivering curriculum, selecting resources, acknowledging students’ needs, communicating effectively and implementing a range of teaching strategies the students have the best opportunities in the classroom. To support all of these factors the management of behaviour is crucial. To target behaviour I implement a range of strategies that I have observed from mentor teachers. I always encourage positive reinforcement for good behaviour choices where possible. I aim to impart and promote values, morals and ethics among children in my class. I have learnt and practiced micro skills to manage class behaviour in quick, subtle but effective ways. The most important aspect of targeting behaviour is to establish relationships and expectations from the very beginning based on mutual respect.
Students sense of connectedness and acceptance impacts on how they actively engage with the class. The safety and wellbeing of students is of upmost importance to me and I strive to make sure I foster a sense of comfort, belonging and trust in me and their peers. I want my classroom to feel like a home away from home, a place with the best possible conditions for learning.
